Dr Mark P. Balenzuela
Bio
Mark began showing interest in Mechatronic systems from a very young age. In 2016, he graduated with Bachelor degrees in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Newcastle, and was awarded first class honours and a faculty medal for academic excellence. He immediately began a Ph.D. candidature with the Mechatronics Engineering department at the same university, and was awarded his Ph.D. in 2021.
Research
Mark's research interests include Bayesian estimation of both parameter and state values based on measured data sets. His work is partly focused on developing computationally cheap Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and jump Markovian system estimators, and discovering new ways they can be utilised with application to fault detection.
Industry
Previously Mark has worked for Your Engineer Pty Ltd, where he was tasked with developing embedded system solutions to real world problems. Mark has also worked for Granite Power Limited (GPL), where he focused on computing fluid windage losses within turbogenerators alongside computer aided design (CAD) responsibilities.
Collaborations
Mark has previously collaborated with Dr. Johan Dahlin from Linköping University in Sweden.
Teaching
Mark has delivered courses both within and outside of the Mechatronics Engineering program at the University of Newcastle. This includes delivery of: GENG1000 - Computer Aided Engineering

MCHA3900 - Mechatronics Design II
Note: MCHA3900 is a 4th year Mechatronics course, requiring thorough knowledge of vehicle and manipulator modeling, estimation and control.
